At a time when Films with a social message are becoming unfashionable, there comes a breath of fresh air in the form of Gulaab Gang. Directed by debutante Soumik Sen, it seems to be one of the most awaited films this season.
The promos show the female lead Madhuri Dixit (Rajjo) fighting against the injustice towards women. Much to the surprise of her fans Juhi Chawla (Sumitra Devi) will be playing a negative lead in the film for the first time. Both Madhuri and Juhi have been in the industry playing unconventional roles in several commercial films. It is quite impressive to see the confidence of these two actresses who’ve step up to the plate to portray characters of such depth and substance. The level of energy exhibited in Gulaab Gang by these two actresses, especially by Madhuri performing Taekwondo with bamboo sticks at this age is commendable.
Star Cast of Gulaab Gang:
While the two veteran Bollywood divas Madhuri Dixit and Juhi Chawla are already hogging the limelight in the trailers of the film, there are some other very talented actors in Gulaab Gang.
The casting was finalized after much speculation. Originally actress Tabu was offered the lead role (Rajjo) but due to some problems, the project was put on hold. Later the production team approached Madhuri Dixit for the role of Rajjo and she agreed with an announcement on Facebook. Tabu was also offered the second lead, which was eventually offered to Juhi Chawla accepted and is set to make her debut as villain politician.
Inspiration from the Gulaabi Gang Founded by Sampat Pal Devi
Initially the film was declared to be based on the life of social work activist, Sampat Pal Devi. However, eventually, the entire team of Gulaab Gang refuted the story and claimed that it is a work of fiction inspired by the teamwork of Gulaabi gang led by Sampat Pal Devi who is a child bride and a mother of five children. She rose to fame with the name of her gang with whose support she fought violence and atrocities faced by women in her village and nearby areas. The gang was successful in stopping the husbands from harassing their wives after beating the guilty men with bamboo sticks. Today these women have formed an organization to look into several issues of women and work for the well being of the society.
Gulaab Gang Releases on the eve of Women’s Day
According to the official sources, Gulaab Gang is scheduled to release on March 7, 2014 just a day before the Women’s Day. It is high time women stood for justice and recognized it as being the need of the hour considering the violence and harassment they have to encounter in their daily lives. that the tag-line of the film “Iss Holi Gulaal Nahi Lahu Bahega” is fiery and provocative. Gulaab Gang might just be the inspiration we needed to raise our voice against theevils of society.
