Neetu Singh was born on 8th July 1958 in Pant Nagar, Delhi to Rajee Kaur and Darshan Singh in a Sikh household. Her real name was Sonia Singh. At the tender age of 8, Neetu Singh started working as a child artiste with the name ‘Baby Sonia’ after being noticed by actress Vaijayanti Mala who offered Neetu her first break in the film ‘Sooraj’. Neetu Singh was Vaijayanti Mala’s student in her dance academy. Some of the popular films where Neetu worked as a child artiste were ‘Pavitra Paapi’ and ‘Waqt’.

Neetu Singh started acting by debuting for the movie ‘Rickshawala’ which was released in 1972 and did not do very well at the box office. A year after that she accepted a small role in the film ‘Yaadon Ki Baraat’ which went on to become a huge success. Her number ‘Lekar Hum Deewana Dil’ was widely appreciated by the audience. Thereafter, she went on to become one of the most sought after actresses of Bollywood by starring in 60 odd films. Neetu Singh’s career was on a full swing after getting nominated for Filmfare for the Best Supporting Actress for ‘Kaala Pathar’ when she decided to get married to her on screen costar in eleven movies and the then superstar Rishi Kapoor. She got married in 1980 at the age of just 21.
