Walk through the streets of Punjab and you’ll find most women in loosely pleated pants with a beautiful top and a shawl over it… What makes it a commonly worn dress across Punjab and especially in Patiala? Let’s find out..

Patiala pants, traditionally known as Patiala-Salwars and the top that is worn over them is generally referred as Kameez.

Origin of Patiala Pants

The Patiala salwar has its roots in the Patiala city, Punjab. The King of Patiala wore the Patiala salwar as a royal dress. The Patiala salwar kameez closely resembles the ‘Pathani Suit’ of Pakistan.

Approximately, untill 2 decades ago, both men and women used to wear the Patiala salwar kameez but now only women wear them. Only in a very few remote regions of Punjab and Haryana, can you find men in Patiala pants.

What makes the Patiala pant unique from other styles is the folding of the cloth stitched together meeting the bottom which gives it that beautiful draping look.

Patiala pants are unusually loose and voluminous which are softly pleated to decrease the bulk and are given that peculiar shape.

DID YOU KNOW?

The Patiala pants are so unique in their making, that it requires almost double the length of the fabrics compared to those used in the making of normal salwars or pants.

Patiala Pants – A Summer Favourite

The fact that they are commonly worn in Punjab and other regions nearby are due to its comfort and durability. They provide a lot of free space and lets the skin breath especially during the summers, as they do not stick to the skin.

Patiala pants have undergone varieties of innovations and are no longer confined to the northern region of India, and have found itself in almost every young woman’s wardrobe.

Bollywood’s new trend – Patiala Pants

With the indulgence of fashion industry, Patiala pants have gained an immense significance in both national and international markets.

The fashion industry for being what it is, started experimenting with the traditional simple Patiala pants and has come out with varieties of beautiful models. Many of these are being used in the Bollywood movies.

Some of the popular actresses featuring in Patiala pants are Kareena Kapoor in Jab We Met, Kangana Ranaut in Tanu Weds Manu, Anushka Sharma in Band Baaja Baarat.
