Manish Malhotra Collection makes Woman Look more Stunning
Manish Malhotra is one major fashion designer who can be credited with having single handily revolutionized the concept of fashion in Bollywood Costumes. Thanks to him, the garish costumes and accessories that were symptomatic of Bollywood in the past has given way to today’s sophisticated , understated elegance. Born in 1965 in London, Malhotra had always been interested in fashion. As a young boy, he would often critically comment on what suited or did not suit his mother. Even at that age, he was always sketching designs and clothes, especially for women.
His first brush with the fashion world came when he commenced modeling as a student at Elphinstone College in Mumbai. It made him long to become a part of the fashion industry, notwithstanding his lack of formal training in fashion.
Director David Dhawan was instrumental in giving the young 24 year –old his first break in Bollywood with Swarg, where Malhotra designed for Juhi Chawla. However, it was only after he designed for Urmila Matondkar in Rangeela in 1995, that he was catapulted into the big league. Subsequent years saw him become an indispensable part of the industry as his costumes redefined the meaning of fashion in Indian Cinema. Within six years time, Malhotra would work with all the top stars of Bollywood. Internationally, it was the opportunity to design for the King of Pop, Michael Jackson which made him a name to reckon with. He was to later design an entire wardrobe for Jackson’s kids too.
His Bollywood career, which began with his first assignment in 1993 has seen him design wardrobes for 61 Bollywood movies, which include blockbusters like Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, Dil to Pagal hain, Kaho Na Pyaar Hain, Om Shanti Om, 3 idiots, Bodyguard, Ra. One, Krrish 3 , and many others.
He has won Filmfare Awards in 1995 and in 2010 for Rangeela and Enthiran respectively. His designs for Karishma Kapoor in in Raja Hindustani won him the Showtime Opinion Poll Award . Dil to Pagal Hai fetched him the Siemen’s Viewer’s Choice Award in 1997 while Kuch Kuch Hota Hain fetched him a Bollywood Award in 1998. He was also felicitated by the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) for his commendable contribution to the world of Fashion, Manish was adjudged the Stylish Designer of the Year at the Elle Style Awards in 1999. His designs have also fetched him the Indira Priyadarshini Memorial Award, and the Zee Cine Award, among many others. In 2005, he started the Manish Malhotra Show on television, which dealt with fashion and the latest international trends.
Manish Malhotra recently designed the entire wardrobe for Kareena Kapoor’s wedding, He has also designed for many international celebrities such as Demi Moore, Kylie Minogue, Reese Witherspoon, Karolina Kurakova, Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell.
