The Journey towards Glam World
A self-taught designer, this ‘Bombay-Bandra boy’ as he prefers to call himself actually belongs to a middle-class Punjabi family. By the time he was in sixth grade, his interest in sketching and drawing gained impetus. Mustering courage, he cleared his science exams and went on to study at Mumbai’s Elphinstone College. Luck took the better of him, when modelling opportunities came his way from brands such as Frooti, Philips radio, Binaca and Weekender. A spate of ad commercials happened, while Manish was in college.
Manish Malhotra started working in a fashion boutique. For over a year or so, he was busy learning and exploring fabrics, cuts and materials. It was then that he decided to start out on his own.
Bitten by the fashion industry bug, Manish took the help of photographer Rakesh Shrestha to introduce him to Bollywood. The chance was ripe for Manish to show his sketches on latest designer suits and sarees to prospects. Bizarre photo shoots were conducted so that the madness could show and invite those who mattered to try out Manish Malhotra designs. This proved to be a healthy end to Manish’s lean phase and the start of his journey in Bollywood over a span of two decades.

It is a big challenge to earn from any personal adventure, especially the one that’s dear to the heart. Manish Malhotra was however prepared for the journey that followed. Sketching being his greatest strength allowed him to introduce ‘Styling’ and that extended to doing hair and make-up. During his initial career phase, gaudy pants and floral prints were very popular. But the slim and lean Manish was in favour of clean and crisp look. That’s possibly how the germ of costume designing came in Manish’s head. That’s when the fashion wave of Manish Malhotra designs came in. Bollywood was dominated by female costume designers than male. Secondly, Manish didn’t have a formal degree in fashion designing to boast of. So as a newcomer, the going was getting tough.
His first film as a costume designer for Rangeela earned him a Filmfare award for Best Costume Designing. The hunger for achievement could hardly be contained. Rangeela’s achievement earned him contracts of two more blockbuster films -Raja Hindustani and Dil Toh Pagal Hai, both having Karisma Kapoor dressed in Designer suits by Manish Malhotra.
