What you see - Located on a busy street in Yousufguda, but in a dilapidated building there is the headquarters for Yoga Art of life. Notions of a posh room, especially because the idea of yoga has many takers now, are quelled when you see a tiny room just enough for two tables. It has an attached spacious room for practising yoga. The only thing that will relate this room to yoga is a poster on the wall that depicts different yoga poses.
What you get - Having begun in 1994 in Visakhapatnam, Yoga Art of Life is run by Yoga Vidya Kendra. They shifted base to the city in 1997. Now, they have branches in Srikakulam and Visakhapatnam. The guruji here, Prasad, learnt yoga for four years under a master and was teaching at Visakhapatnam, before he moved to Hyderabad.
Here they offer a basic course for 14 days – 2 hours daily. In the morning, it is from 6.30 AM to 7.30 AM. In the evenings, the session begins at 5 PM and ends at 7.30 PM. Here they teach the breathing techniques and suryanamaskara. They get you fruits and fresh vegetables to quell your hunger after the exercise. Every two months, they have a new batch.
Another segment here is Simply Yoga. This is for one hour everyday for a month, in the morning or evening as per your choice. Here the fee is Rs 250 and they teach you yogasanas and suryanamaskar.
They offer a one-week executive programme for working professionals. You have to attend classes for two hours for a week. Here they teach you stress management techniques, breathing techniques, health management and yogasanas. Here the fee varies depending on what they will spend on you but the minimum could be around Rs. 2,000. This also allows you to practise yoga for one hour each day for your entire lifetime.
For those looking at resolving problems through meditation, there is an advanced meditation camp. It is a 2.5 days residential program. They book an ashram for this program and you have to pay Rs. 700 inclusive of the stay and food.
Our verdict - The guru here gives talks on Gemini TV, TV-9 etc on yoga, so he must have some knowledge on the topic. But, he converses only in Telugu, so it is not easy for someone who knows only English or Hindi to learn at this Kendra.
